Senate Bill 849 UPDATE 7-29-09 S 849 Dies in Committee At the meeting Sen. Albertson read a summary of SB849 and discussed why safety inspection were no longer needed in North Carolina. He also went on to say that there is no evidence that safety inspections reduce accidents or fatalities. Several members representing the industry testified in opposition to the bill, including Bob Pulverenti, IGO, IGONC President A. C. Guarino, Reece Hester of NC Tire Dealers Association, as well as representatives from NC DMV and NC Highway patrol. At the conclusion Sen. Albertson was allowed to give a final statement with
Sen. Soles then calling for a motion to move the bill along. No such motion was
raised and the bill died in committee.
Senate Bill 857 Emissions Inspection Frequency <Full text> <Current bill status > This bill calls for the elimination of safety inspections in all counties; it also calls for a management improvement plan for the emission inspection program. The bill doesn’t define what the improvements might be. It does, however, change the language from 96 and newer for an emission inspection to “vehicles that are four (4) model years or older” eliminating three (3) years of vehicles from the inspection pool. This bill also changes the fee for the emission inspection to $9.13 and $7.27 for an authorization for a total inspection fee of $16.40, a decrease of $13.60 from the current fee of $30.00. This bill also eliminates the waiver process.
House Bill 1207 State version of Cash for Clunkers, proposes incentives to remove older vehicles from the highways.
House Bill 1285 This bill will establish licensure requirements for mechanical and collision repair shops and technicians.
